#32. Orlando Magic - Jay Riola - The Magic: journey of a pioneer innovation strategy within the NBA

In 2014, Orlando opened the first design thinking-based innovation lab in the NBA. The Magic can be regarded as a pioneer in a league already known for its innovation and digital skills.

Clever use of a CRM and ticket strategy, innovation challenges, and data-driven business model has put the Floridian team ahead of its time in terms of digital transformation.

We had the pleasure of receiving Jay Riola, Executive VP of strategy and innovation at the club, to discuss this status and the club's mid and long-terms goals. In this episode, you will learn about:

  • Jay’s journey: a Denver-born, rooted at the Magic for 16 years

  • 2010 data shift and its impact

  • The Innovation department: an internal agency with a 360 view?

  • NBA’s global digital strategy and Magic’s specificities

  • Stakes and value of Orlando’s Innovation Challenge

  • The keys to attracting a young audience

  • The role of Gaming and E-Sport in the business model
